We’re thrilled to have been crowned a winner twice at the inaugural Wales STEM Awards on Thursday November 12th in a virtual ceremony hosted by Welsh celebrity Sian Lloyd.
Our fellow award finalists included 42 other innovative companies – the very best of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) in Wales, UK.
The Wales STEM Awards were launched last year in a bid to recognize the innovative STEM work being undertaken in Wales, address the diversity gap and skills shortage, and inspire and raise the aspirations of the next generation.
Innovation in Science Award – Winner, 2020
We’re so pleased to have won the Innovation in Science Award; an award that celebrates ‘a clear commitment to research and development, continued innovation and future growth potential.’
A key requirement was for the winner to have created and developed innovative science products and processes that have improved the performance of the organization.
At Genesis Biosciences, our team work tirelessly to produce industry-leading products that bring a significant positive impact to a wide number of industries.
From our range of innovative, probiotic cleaning products to our surface sanitizer range with tested & proven efficacy against COVID-19, our work focuses on developing specific solutions to better our lives on a global scale.
STEM Environmental Initiative of the Year – Winner, 2020
Our second award recognizes STEM businesses for whom sustainability is at the core of their activities and whose environmental initiative has resulted in significant environmental improvement.
The judges looked for businesses that have developed an environmental initiative and have built sustainability into the strategic operations of the business.
We were awarded for our effective, efficient, and environmentally-responsible technologies – otherwise known as eco-benign®, an initiative we created to highlight the lack of impact on the environment our products have.
We don’t use harsh chemicals; instead we harness the action of naturally occurring beneficial microbes and readily biodegradable, non-toxic chemistry.
Simply put, our products offer superior, long lasting effectiveness without the harmful chemical formulations of traditional products.
We’re thrilled to win such prestigious awards
Our General Manager for Europe, Dr. Emma Saunders, ‘virtually’ attended the ceremony and celebrated in the best way possible… with a cup of tea, of course!
Speaking about the award wins, Dr. Saunders said: “We’re absolutely delighted. It’s a real honor to have the company recognized in this way.
“Like many businesses in Wales, we’ve had a very challenging year, and despite that, our team have worked so hard – tirelessly – throughout the last 9 months to continue to innovate and develop new products.
“Those products are now being used across the world to protect people from COVID-19 and also help businesses and schools to get back to work.
“For us all, it’s just a fantastic achievement and I know everyone [the team] will be watching at home tonight, and I know they’ll share my gratitude and appreciation, so thank you so much.”
More about the Wales STEM Awards
Head judge Louise Bright, founder of the Wales Women in STEM network, said: “We would like to offer a huge congratulations all of the winners of the very first Wales STEM Awards.
“The calibre of those nominated for the awards was second to none and we were overwhelmed by the number of entries we received.
“We would also like to congratulate all of those who were shortlisted, we really feel that all of the finalists represent some of the most progressive organizations and individuals at the forefront of STEM innovation in Wales.
“We are very much looking forward to the future of the Wales STEM Awards and the future of the STEM sector in Wales.”
Co-founder Liz Brookes of Grapevine Event Management said: “While it was a shame that we weren’t able to celebrate the awards in person, we are extremely happy that we were able to celebrate virtually. I would like to offer a huge congratulations to all of the winners and to all of those shortlisted. Your work is incredibly important, and we thank you for your contributions to STEM in Wales.
“When we launched the awards at the tail end of 2019, we could never have predicted that a global pandemic would scupper our event plans, while at the same time, shine a global spotlight on the importance of STEM in our lives.
“In the last year, science has allowed researchers to study the virus, technology has allowed us to work from home effectively, engineering has enabled us to build ventilators and convert buildings into hospitals, and mathematical modelling has helped the government and health professionals look at the spread and potential impact of the virus.
“Not only have STEM skills been vital in the fight against the virus, but they will continue to be essential as we recover from the crisis and we’re proud to be shining a spotlight on our innovators in Wales.”
The nominated charity partner for the awards was Cancer Research Wales, which is dedicated to developing life-changing treatments, diagnostic techniques, and research for people with cancer.
